One of the more difficult jobs a coach faces is to issue disciplinary action to his team. He never can be certain how it might affect his team.
Such action was needed before the Lady Flier game when the normal starting five were benched for the first quarter. On top of that the girls had been playing somewhat inconsistently for several games adding to more concern for Coach Dave Lozier and his staff.
Fortunately for the Fliers, the new starting five responded to their coach’s call and defeated Edison 9-7 in the opening quarter and ultimately led to a 53-36 victory.
One had to be wondering what was going on in the “normal starters” minds as they pondered things while their teammates played quite well in front of them. When it was time for them to play, they did not disappoint their coaches, teammates, and fans.
In the second quarter the benched five played intermittently with their other teammates and defeated The Lady Chargers 17-5 leading to a comfortable 26-12 halftime margin. Six different girls scored in the frame led by Bree Dowling’s nine points.
Despite trailing, the Lady Chargers pushed the Fliers in the second half. Outstanding free throw shooting particularly by Heidi Marshall and Dowling helped keep things in the blue and gold’s control.
For the game, Clyde was 17-21 from the charity stripe while Edison was 8-11. Throughout the final quarters every girl on the varsity team made their way onto the court, and most seemed to contribute to the Lady Flier win. Dowling led the scorers with 17, while Marshall added 16 for CHS.
The Lady Flier JV team used a 25-7 run in the middle quarters plus a 5-0 advantage in number of made three’s to run away with their 16th win in 17 tries — 44-28. Alexis Keegan paced the JV team with 10 points while Jackie Smith and Sam Ackerman added 8 and 7 points respectively. The JV team is now 16-1 on the season.
