At times throughout any school sports season, the home fans can celebrate with their beloved team the joys of a thrilling victory. However, at other times most fans have to grieve with their favored squad over a bitter defeat. Some might say that is what makes sports so exciting.
After the Flier softball unit fell in the last inning to Edison, 3-2, the only feeling in the blue and gold hearts was ‘devastated’.
Freshman Hunter Schwochow entered the pitcher’s circle for Marc Marshall’s team. The Fliers helped her with a run in the first. Maddie Montgomery, with one out, stroked a single to left. After she took second base off a fielder’s choice, she scored on a base hit by Maddy Young.
The game soon began to take shape as a pitcher’s duel between Hunter and Edison’s Erica Reber. But, in the top of the sixth, the Clyde girls struck again.
Heidi Marshall smacked a single into left field. Second hitter Montgomery laid down a terrific sacrifice bunt to advance Marshall to second. She did not remain there for long for Andriana Sanchez scorched a smash over the left fielder’s head for an RBI double.
Up 2-0 in the basement half of the seventh, the Chargers’ lead-off hitter grounded out to third baseman Sydnee Helms. The second Charger ripped a mean smash to third again. This time Helms bobbled the ball just for a moment but long enough to allow the Charger dashing down the line to reach first just ahead of the strong throw.
The next Charger stroked a single up the middle advancing the runner to third. After hitting the single into center, the Charger stole second uncontested to put runners at second and third.
On the next at bat, Marshall made what could have been the play of the game. The talented second baseman ranged far to her right to knock down a screaming grounder headed for right center.
Her great play kept the Fliers ahead 2-1. But with runners now at first and third, Edison got a line-drive hit that drove in both runs and ended the game with the Chargers winning, 3-2.
Young and Marshall had two hits to lead the Fliers.
The Fliers fell to 5-5 on the season and are on a three-game skid.
