Clyde Fliers baseball notches rare win against Perkins Pirates

For those who have followed Clyde baseball during Perkins coach Ray Neill time at the helm of the Pirates program, it has not been much fun facing Perkins. The cagey coach of many years always seems to produce sound teams and clever strategies to outsmart his opponents.

Last Friday though, Clyde’s young team took the Pirate’s large field with eager hopes to avenge an earlier loss at Clyde High School.

Flier sophomore Rob Webb bore down to stymie the Perkins’ bats on just three hits. He didn’t give up a walk. Only a last inning hit batter blemished his masterpiece over the frustrated Pirates.

The Pirates tallied two runs to take the lead, 2-0, in the third. Sometimes though, things change for an opposing pitcher when he faces his batters.

The second time through the lineup, Ryan Kelley opened things up in the fourth with a walk. Nate a Gittinger then singled.

After a foul out to first, two consecutive walks led to the first Flier run. Sophomore catcher Jarod Colvin plated two more with a single.

Mixed into the growing chaos for Perkins was a pitcher’s balk. The inning ended with a dramatic blast from the left-handed bat of Frank Sewell, his first of the season and the team’s second in the same week.

Meanwhile, there was Rob Webb, methodically plowing through the Pirate hitters. And even the well-respected coach Ray Neill was helpless to prevent the rare win at Perkins.
