The best boys soccer season in the school history came to an end last week.
The Fliers hosted their first ever home playoff game last Thursday, when Tiffin Columbian came to play in the opening round of the sectional tournament. The Tornadoes knocked of the Fliers, 3-2.
In the first half, Tiffin Columbian midfielder Kevin Miller scored in the opening 12 minutes of the match to give the visitors a early lead.
With just under 10 minutes left in the half though, Clyde’s Zach Taylor found Cam Margarum on a well-executed counter attack to tie things up at one.
Two minutes later, Clyde was called for a penalty in the box to give the Tornadoes a penalty kick, which was buried in the back of the net to give the visiting team a 2-1 halftime lead.
In the second half the Fliers put another goal in, this time Margarum assisting Taylor by sending a corner high to the middle of the box where Taylor soared over two Columbian defenders to head the ball in the net. The goal knotted the match back up at two.
With six minutes remaining though, Tiffin Columbian struck one last time to put the match away.
Clyde’s Caleb Nesbit ended the game with two steals, nine interceptions, and six clears. Seth Hohman had eight steals, three interceptions and three clears.
Brock Newsome added eight steals, four interceptions, and three clears. Lance Daniels had an excellent last game saving 17 of 20 shots on goal.
Clyde coach Sahen Fultz wasn’t focused on the team’s season coming to a close, but rather what a fantastic season it was for his team.
“This marks the end to a fantastic first season as coach,” Fultz said. “Very disappointed we couldn’t capitalize on our home field, especially since I feel like we were the better team in terms of skill and possession. Tiffin Columbian is a quality team, but I think they just did a good job of making the most of our few mistakes.
“The only thing this team didn’t accomplish this year was advancing in the playoffs, not bad to come up one goal short of your wish list though. Very proud of their fight, not just against Tiffin but all year.”
