Clyde Fliers volleyball team’s season ends after reaching sectional finals

The volleyball season may have ended for the Fliers, but the team continued to show fight and resiliency in the postseason, as they did all season long.

Last week, Clyde advanced to the OHSAA sectional finals, before their season finally came to a close in Bowling Green.

Last Tuesday night, the Fliers hosted Lake in the opening round of the postseason tournament. Clyde swept the match, 3-0.

Scoring in the match was 25-8, 25-1 and 25-14.

Jenna Hoppe finished the match with 16 digs, while Brianna Huether had four kills and four digs. Alicia Carter-Koonce had eight kills, and Grace Borden had five kills and five digs.

Heidi Marshall had six kills and eight digs, while Moragan Bannister had 27 assists. Maddie Greenslade had four kills and eight solo blocks.

The win in the sectional semifinals meant the Fliers advanced to the sectional finals, which were played last Thursday night in Bowling Green.

The Fliers season ended with a 0-3 sweep at the hands of the host team. Scoring in the match was 20-25, 16-25 and 19-25.

In the match Bannister finished with 19 assists, and Hoppe had 13 digs. Carter-Koonce had five kills and three blocks, while Borden had 11 kills, eight digs and four blocks.

Marshall finished with 20 digs and five kills.The Fliers ended the season with a 12-12 record, in a year in which the teams seemingly battled injuries the entire time. Coach Betty Hasselbach is happy with the way her younger players stepped up and gave the team some fight.She also feels it could mean good things for next season.

“As a team, we had to overcome some big injuries, but we played through them,” Hasselbach said. “During the second half of the SBC, we started playing well. We had big wins against Perkins, Oak Harbor, and Margaretta and put up a good fight against Edison and Huron.

“I’m happy that many of the younger girls stepped up their level of play. Next year should be a good one!”
