CLYDE — The Fliers varsity boys basketball team continues to make strides, though it may not have shown up in the team’s record last week.
Clyde battled Edison and rival Bellevue last week, and though they are showing improvement, they were unable to pull out a win. Clyde coach Lou Garcia feels the team just needs a little more time to find their basketball legs to rack up some wins.
“We are improving as a team at each practice,” Garcia said. “Our practices are crucial to us to work on the little things as individuals and as a team to start getting the wins. The team works hard at each and every practice it is just taking us a little longer to get our basketball legs.”
Last Tuesday, the Fliers hosted Edison and fell to the Chargers, 51-41.
Zach Rieman was top shooter of the night with a total of 13 points, while Jake Jenne ended the game with 10. Lucas Nicely added eight more points to the board, and Tanner Davenport added six of his own.
On Saturday the Fliers hosted Bellevue for their rivalry game which never disappoints. The game stayed close throughout the game with the Redmen being in the lead at the end of the first, 10-8.
The Fliers battled back in the second quarter to grab an 18-15 lead by halftime.
In the second half the battle continued with the Fliers and the Redman neck and neck to the final seconds of the game. With 32 seconds left, a foul was called on the Redmen and Rieman’s two shots went in to cut the Bellevue lead to 43-40. Rieman’s total of 29 points for the game was to no avail as the physical nature of the game took over and the Fliers fouled in the final seconds where the Redman were successful in beating the Fliers by four.
Final score of the game was Bellevue 46, Clyde 42.
Even though another loss was added the Fliers boys played a hard physical game and never gave up. Those are just some of the reasons that Garcia remains proud of his team.
“I’m proud of each of the guys on my team as they are working hard and never give up,” Garcia said.
The next game will be held on Wednesday when the Fliers will travel to Port Clinton. Tip off time set for 4:30 with freshman and JV to start and varsity to follow. Then on Saturday, the Fliers will travel to Monroeville with tip off time set for 6:00 with JV to start and varsity to follow. The Flier then travel to Fremont St Joe on January 4 with tip off time set for 4:45 with freshman and JV to start and varsity to follow.
